Troupe Play - 500poundsofnothing - 10-07-2026

Hey I am going to be starting an in person campaign soon. It's gonna be an open table megadungeon and I am planning on running it Troupe style with the players getting to decide what characters they want to play each session.
Is there anyone else on this forum who has done troupe style play before? Are there any pitfalls that I should watch out for that are not immediately obvious?

Most of the games I play are megadungeon-based semi-troupe games, and honestly it runs pretty natural.

The big question that I think comes up is how hard to bother tracking locations and timelines of off-duty characters.

Are you ending every session with being outside of the dungeon again? If not, what happens to characters whose players miss a session? Do they just poof in and out of existence?

If side-locations and overland play crops up, are you tracking where every character of every player is at all times or are you just hand-waiving it?

I tend to do open tables, so I lean pretty "just don't look too hard" on these questions, but all styles can work.
