Forum Philosophy
- Do the reading. Research is always valuable! Respect and appreciate those who have taken the time to do their homework. (And share what you’ve been reading so we can read it, too!)
- Learn from disagreement. We are all going to disagree with each other, often. If we are in total agreement, something has gone awry! Skepticism, critique, and close examination are a gift: it means your peers are reading what you wrote with earnest intent.
- Try on new viewpoints. Take a beat to play the Devil’s advocate (though be clear when you do). Earnestly consider the arguments others make, and think through the ramifications they pose.
- It’s cool to flippantly disregard the established orthodoxy (and don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t), but only when you can actually back that disregard up with understanding. If you pooh-pooh the existing standards only to end up parroting the same arguments in a new context, you’ve failed in both directions.
- Read more than you write. Write often. If you have a big long complicated argument or essay with many parts, consider hosting it elsewhere, like a blog, then linking it here for us to discuss.
These ideas, as with the forum itself, may well change over time.
